Pharrell Reveals Artwork for New Single 'Marilyn Monroe'

Yesterday, Pharrell Williams debuted the artwork for his latest single 'Marilyn Monroe .' Much to my delight, the cover features a gorgeous Black woman of deep complexion.

The choice appears to be no accident because earlier this year he drew criticism for the cover to his latest album 'G  I  R  L' which featured no dark-skinned women.


In an interview with GQ, Pharrell asserted that the observation of the exclusion of a dark-skinned woman was about "insecuity." “Yo, you don’t need nobody to represent you. You represent you." he told the mag.

Whether or not Pharrell cares to admit it, representation matters. Lupita Nyong'o has talked frequently about the messaging she received from her peers and media that her beautiful, dark complexion was undesirable. The cover art is dope, and if there's a chance a little, Black girl can see and feel affirmed that's good enough for me.
